Tras ellas (de Celestina a Xirgu)

Muse of Lorca, Margarita Xirgu went into exile in Uruguay during the Spanish dictatorship, where she left a profound mark as both an actress and a teacher. In 1949, she directed La Celestina at the Teatro Solís, also taking on the leading role. Fernando de Rojas’s play, written at the end of the 15th century, anticipates modernity by addressing timeless and complex themes such as female desire.

In Tras Ellas, Celestina and Xirgu converse across the centuries through words and music. The play reflects on the role of women in spaces of power and representation.
